Oatmeal for Breakfast.... fixed in the crock pot while you sleep

In the winter when it's cold outside I really like eating oatmeal for breakfast.  There's just something about a warm meal that sticks to your ribs on a cold day and makes the snow and ice bearable.  I found this great recipe that cooks in your crock pot overnight while you sleep.  And you can pick and choose some of the ingredients according to your own tastes and likes.  I used apples and cranberries in mine, but you could easily use raisins and pecans or just eat it plain.  Simpley put your ingredients into the crock pot, turn it on and go to sleep.  When you wake up you will have a hot and nurshing breakfast waiting on you.

Ingredients:  1 cup steel cut oatmeal, 1 T. Cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 2 1/2 cups milk, 2 cups water.  (Optional ingredients to suit your tastes; 1 appled sliced, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup pecans, 1/2 cup cranberries)
Tip: I used a crock pot liner to help make clean up easy, but if you don't have one, just grease your crock pot really good with a spray cooking oil.

Directions: Place ingredients in a greased crock pot.  Set to low.  Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours.  Serves: 6

Once I dished myself up a bowl, I added a little bit of brown sugar to the bowl and it really made the cinnamon and apple flavors pop.

This sounds soooo good, and I am not usually a big fan of oatmeal. Maybe it sounds good because I am very cold right now?!!! Yum!

Do you have to use steel cut oats or can you use regular oatmeal?

I've been looking for a crock pot oatmeal recipe, and I wanted to also say it's nice to find a fellow 'Hoosier' here in blogville!! :) I've grabbed some of your other recipes, as well, and I'll be following! We've always wanted to live on a farm, and be more self sufficient ... anyone who is able, and does so, well, I must say, they are blessed!! I was so anxious to try this but only had instant/regular oats...it was disasterous! Lol! I would say steel cut oats are a must! Trying again now...with steel cut oats this time. Can't wait til morning :-)

Total deliciousness!! Next time I may add an extra apple. I added a tiny bit of brown sugar & milk to the bowl before I ate it. Will be making this all winter!

So question: How does this store and work out for left overs. I'm really the only one that would eat it so it would last probably all week.
