I don't even know where to begin with this post.... so I guess I'll start at the beginning.
Ott, E and I went to Wisconsin for Labor Day weekend to visit his family. We were going to go to his hometown's festival parade, grill out, visit with the relatives and then stop by the festival. His hometown (Sauk City, Wisconsin) hosts this festival and contest every year on Labor Day. What kind of a festival you ask??? .....a cow chip festival with the state's cow chip throwing contest.
Now, if your asking what's a cow chip you may want to stop reading about now. A cow chip or cow patty is dried cow poop. And apparently seeing how far you can throw it, is a sport in some areas of the country. In fact there is even a National Cow Chip throwing contest in Oklahoma each year which the winner of this contests gets to attend.
Well now your probably asking how did I get entered into this contest? I was sitting at Ott, E's parents house minding my own business when his uncle called and said he was going to sign me up to be in the contest. At first I declined, but then when I found out his mother, aunt and cousin were going to compete I figured I'd at least be in good company, I'm mean... when in Rome.... (I still didn't know for sure what I was getting myself into.)
Now being a farmgirl I'll admit I have touched a lot of gross things in my day. But also, with being a farmgirl, comes knowing when to put on a pair of gloves to get the job done. One of the few rules in this cow chip throwing contest was, no gloves.
Now my first instinct to throwing this cow chip was to throw it like a Frisbee, but what I learned was that the winners throw their cow chips overhand. Each entrant gets two chips to throw and the farthest throw is the one that is recorded. So for your cow chip viewing pleasure, below is video of my attempt along with Ott, E's relatives.
I came in at 32.2 feet. Obviously not the winning throw, but still somewhat respectable and I didn't hit anyone in the audience which was my only goal. Below is Ott, E's father throwing. And here is Ott, E's uncle throwing. (he's the one who signed me up for this.) And Labor Day 2012 is only 363 days away so make your travel plans now to travel to Sauk City, Wisconsin to get in on this end of summer tradition.

Hah-what an idea! Sometimes you just have to wonder, who and WHY these things were dreamt up?!
Love it...I am not sure I'd get it over 10 feet. Good job.
I wanna go, I wanna go - this looks like so much fun!
I know exactly what cow chips are. They are used for more than one thing. They have been know to used in a sporty way.
I want to be there next year. I was a college THROWER. But never cow chips. Way to go! Thanks for linking up.
LOVE it!!
haha. The dry ones aren't as fun as the semi-dry ones lol!!
Too funny! I think there have been several such events on the farm usually between younger siblings. The chips probably weren't quite as..uhm ... crisp as yours were. Great post!
Grew up on a farm in IN. We had beef cattle and milk cows. I certainly know what a cow chip is but do not want to throw one. I have stepped in one though!
I love your blog! Thanks for going to the places, taking photos and posting!
