a Weedy Wordless Wednesday

The wet spring has kept farmers in our area out of the fields longer than expected.  So a couple of weeks ago if you were driving through the country side you might have seen some fields that look like these below.  Although in some ways they do look rather pretty they are weeds.  And weeds limit the ability of crops to grow and produce at their full potential.   Ott, E took these pictures of weed covered fields and helped me identify them to share with you, so the next time you are out driving through the county side and see a field like this you will know exactly what week that is out there blooming.
Above is a field of henbit, which is a part of the mint family and has square stems.
This is a field of cressleaf groundsel.  It has a yellow flower and grows to be about waist high.

This is a picture of purple deadnettle which is closely related to henbit.  It also is a shorter growing weed with small purple flowers.

I saw a couple taking what I would presume their engagement pictures in a field with the cressleaf groundsel. I'm sure they are pretty pictures, but I was sure they didn't know they were weeds.

I think the yellow blooms look beautiful (especially since they're not in my garden :)! I guess it just proves the truth of the old saying; "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

HA! to Heather's comment. The fields DO look pretty until you realize how much it's going to cost to get rid of them! Thanks for the 411 on weeds!

Yes I agree with the other comments. Weeds can be pretty...until you learn what they are! They are expensive to get rid of in our crops. Thanks for linking up for WW!

I think you just helped me identify what's growing in my neighbor's "lawn"! My little one runs over to pic the little purple flowers! :)

I'm stopping by from It's a Blog Party!

They are such a nuisance! We get rid of the first round of weeds...and a few weeks later, here comes the second round...then the third...the never ending battle.

My bean field is covered in thistle and nettle. It just got sprayed and planted, but now we've had five inches of rain, so we'll see if anything grows.
