plOTTing and planting: our tomato harvest

Photobucket
Well throughout this growing season Ott, E and I have kept you updated on the status of the tomatoes in our garden.  They were planted as seedlings, flowered, produced green tomatoes and now they are turning red and we are starting to harvest them.
We had an overabudance of cherry tomatoes (and we can only eat so many salads, BLT's etc.) so I decided to dehydrate some with Ott, E's food dehydrator.

I cut the cherry tomatoes either in halves or in quarters and then lined them out on the tray.  I had the dehydrator set on a low setting and had it on for about 15 hours.  It worked out pretty well, and I am hoping to use them in some sun dried tomato breads and itallian dishes this winter.

Want to know what else I am doing with my tomatoes???  Stop by next week for my "Canning Week Blog Party" as I will be posting lots of tips, recipes, there will be a linky party and give-a-ways!!!  It should be lots of fun and a great opportunity to learn and share all about canning.

Sun dried tomatoes are quite expensive. So it's great to make your own when you have an abundant tomato harvest. I made some too.
I'll try not to miss your Canning Week Party as it sounds like a lot of fun.
Have a great Tuesday ;-)

Wow--well done! I am still probably a couple of weeks away from red tomatoes, so I have tomato envy! I usually dry some as well, and they are wonderful for use in the winter.

I finally found a dehydrator at a garage sale so now I won't have to borrow my neighbors every year. I love having dried tomatoes--they taste just like summer all through the wintertime.

I am still waiting for tomatoes! I had one a day or two ago but ate it quick before anyone saw:) I love the idea of drying them.

That is a great idea about drying the cherry tomatoes! I got a dehydrator for christmas and forgot all about it! Can't wait for the canning week on your blog! I have been canning up a storm!

Great idea! I love sundried tomatoes... We haven't had enough to not want to eat all of them basically straight after picking, but maybe when the big ones start growing...

Ah Yes! ONE should only plant ONE cherry tomato plant in a garden. Those things are worse than bunnies and weeds! Can't wait until next week to see what you girls come up with for us!

What beautiful cherry tomatoes, and I never thought to make sun-dried tomatoes from cherry tomatoes! It sounds like you already have some ideas on how to use those sun-dried tomatoes, and here's one more to add to your list: add them to your pesto (just process everything together in your food processor) if you grow any basil at home. Sun-dried tomato pesto is a wonderful variation of the classic basil pesto!

Yes- we love dried tomatoes- grape ones dry well, too. I'll be stopping by next week to see what you're canning! Thanks for sharing at the Tuesday Garden Party.
