plOTTing and planting: varmit control

So last year we planted green beans in our garden and just as they were starting to come on something (probably deer) came along and ate them down to just stubs.  I think I only got two servings of actual green beans off our garden.

My father gave me a suggestion of putting some cheap bars of soap around that the deer do not like the smell and would leave our garden alone.  The soap won't hurt the plants and I figured that would look better than a fence.  So I laid 4 bars of hotel room soap around our garden.

Then I was at the dentist and he said he heard citronella candles would keep deer away as well.  Again, they don't like the smell and would leave.  So I threw a couple of votive candles out in my garden as well.

A couple times I would go out to my garden and the soap would have bite and scratch marks on it, or be a couple feet away from the garden.  Regardless if the soap and candles really worked or not, my green beans went unharmed and this past weekend I harvested a 5 gallon bucket almost full.

You know what that means?!?!?!?  It's Canning Time!!!  And I will have a whole week dedicated to canning on this blog and partnering with another blog during our "Canning Week Blog Party" August 23-27.  Come back then for lots of tips, recipes, linky parties and give-a-ways all on canning.

Thank you for stopping by my blog on "Made by You Monday" and inviting me to your canning party. I would be honored to participate! I am borrowing your button to put on my blog's sidebar to remind me (and to help advertise a little).

By the way, my daughter is ALL the way up in Indiana. :) She is working on her Master's of Music degree at Ball State University. We traveled up and attended the Indiana State Fair with her last year. It was great! I wondered if you happened to be there?

It's very nice to meet you and I'll see you again in August!

I've heard dryer sheets work, too.

I love the ideas to discourage deer. This is the first year we've had problems with deer. But then, it is also the first time we planted some garden in the back of our pasture, far from the house. Combined with our drought, there is no hope for that patch this year, but I'm going to try to remember this tip for next year!

Thanks for sharing!

I'm looking forward to canning this year. I made my first jelly earlier this spring, and am hoping to can some tomatoes and peppers and corn later this summer.

Great tips...one more, clipped human hair sprinkled around plants is a good deterrent because it's prickly and organic too. My husband brings home bags from his barber, wears rubber gloves and sprinkles it around when ever he sees anything near the garden!

Congrats on such a beautiful bean crop...and happy canning!

Beautiful beans--well done! I live in town, and so deer are not too much of a problem, and I am just waiting for my bean plants to flower now.

Beautiful beans. I have some bunnies visiting the gardena little bit more than I would like..but the deer have been staying away from the upground veggie garden...no so the bottomland sweet corn patch. Gone! every single ear shoot. At the moment, the critters I am most unhappy with are of the small six legged kind, striped or spotted, and fly to all the healthy and sick cucurbits in the neighborhood. I am thinking of making my next post about them. Needless to say, I am not producing organic cucurbits this fall.

I live in Hot/rainy/tropical, SoFla and there is no way I could grow beans.. but I have tried! I've changed the soil.. awww! I gave up a few years ago and go to the farmers market..lol
I'd love to stop by and watch you all 'can'...I did make a very large batch of Strawberry and Blueberry jam last week...good price at the FM) does that count?
Nice blog!

Interesting tips. My mother-in-law's garden hasn't been hit by creatures this year, but the heat and rain have been rather hard on her garden and our sweet corn. I don't think we are going to get to freeze any sweet corn this year and I think I will have to wait another year to learn to can from her.

Have you heard of using hair? My aunt cut hair and gave it to us during garden time! It always kept the varmits out too! I like your tip a lot!

Glad that worked for you - I too am having deer problems this year. Am trying "natural" deer repellents with mixed results.

Good for you with the soap- we finally just put up a fence to deal with deer. I'll be looking forward to your canning week. Thanks for sharing at the Tuesday Garden Party!
