Country Side phOTTography: Wheat Field

As you drive around the country side this time of year a lot of wheat fields are turning that golden color which means they are about ready to harvest.  Ott, E took this picture of a wheat field not too far from our house.  Wheat was first planted in the US in 1777 and by the year 2009, U.S. farmers planted 63 million acres of wheat in 42 states.  One acres of wheat can produce 1,680 loaves (1.5 pounds each) of commerical white bread.  Or one acres of wheat could be used to make 1,800 boxes (24 oz. each) of a wheat flake cereal.

Nice statistics! I didn't realize it was so ready early in the summer. Then again, things grow a little later here in the north! Looks pretty though!

Makes me want to run right thru it, or lay in the middle of it and stare up at the sky!

Wow, 1,680 loaves of bread from one acre. I wonder how many of them end up in the trash containers. A loaf of bread is a lot of hard labor of many, many people, and the picture above shows us its beginning. We should remember that and do our best not to waste food.

Great facts on wheat. Sorry I didn't ready your post before I blogged about wheat. I've been a bit behind this week.

I think I know where this picture was taken.:-)

Cool pic, A. The USDA Soft Wheat Quality Lab is on our campus where I work. Before giving tours there, I didn't realize there were so many different KINDS of wheat specific to so many different REGIONS!! But, we OH and IN folks grow the best kind....not bread, pasta, cracker or cereal wheat (except maybe the farmers up toward MI fall into the cereal wheat region...not sure on that one)....but WE grow BAKING wheat...PERFECT for CAKES, COOKIES, and other yummies like TWINKIES!! lol! In fact, our lab tests new varieties for their baking quality by baking cakes & cookies!! lol!

Yes, they've been harvesting near us, too. I love to see those wheat fields.
